This Slim book is a valuable addition to our very slightstock of memoirs and of the distilled wisdom of a man of affairs, who is a highly placed civil, servant with years and years of experience as an administrator in various capacities.
The first two essays are autobiographical in character and seek to review the sentimental journey and memories of a past that contain much that is full of anguish. The third essay is also of a personal nature, but basically it is a half-humorous, half-satiric observation of the western life style.
The last four essays contain the accumulated wisdom of the writer as an administrator, and reflect his deep moral preoccupation with the lack of 'accountability' in our public life. The story of the lack of 'accountability' that Mr. Ahmed tells us is indeed a tragic one, but then all affirmations of life arise from our sense of the tragic.
