Born at Peshwar Dr. Shaukat had his early education of Gujrat, Rawalpindi and Lahore. He joined Governmnet College, Lahore where he completed his studies for his first Master's degree. Currently Dr. Shaukat Mahmood is on HEC Professor & Coordinator, Research Centre, College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Lahore where he is supervising several PhD and MPhil theses. He is an eminent educationist, research scholar and cortoonist. He is considered to be an authority on Islamic Architecture and respected internationally for his research publications and over 400 research papers on Islamic Art and Architecture. He has represented Pakistan of many itnernational forums and has been teaching in the Universities of Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. He is the first ever non-Malaysian to hold Al-Bukhari Chair for the promotion of Islamic Arts and Architecture at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur from 2001-2006. Prior to this he headed the Department of Architecture, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, where he later become Dean of Architecture and Planning. He also has researched, scripted and hosted over 400 documentaries on architectural heritage of Pakistan for PTV and other channels.
Dr. Shaukat Mahmood did his MA in Fine Arts from University of the Punjab, Lahore in 1962 securing first class first position and earning Gold Medal, for which Government College University awarded him Academic Roll of Honour the same year. He was the first Pakistani to earn MSc degree in Environmental and Architectural Convervation from Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. His PhD thesis on Islamic Architecture was completed at the University of Edinburgh in 1981.
Dr. Shaukat is also a political cartoonist and draws cartoons under the nom de plume of Maxim which is a household name in Pakistan. Over 200,000 of his cartoons have been published in newspapers and journals so far. He is the auther of two books of cartoons the Target Killing and WMD-The US Weapons of Mass Deceit.
Prof. Dr. Shaukat Mahmood was awarded Presidents Medal for Pride of Performance in 2001 while he was abroad serving at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He was also awarded Sitar-i-Imtiaz for his service to Islamic architecture and arts in 2010. Prof. Dr. Shaukat Mahmood is one of those singular scholars whose scholarship has been recognized twice by the Government of Pakistan.
