This work gives an analytical account of the constitutional development in Pakistan from 1947 to 1956 and a study of the Constitution then adopted.
From a resume of the historical background to the Transfer of Power in India, Dr. Choudhury goes on to examine the many problems confronting the legislastors of the new Pakistan; the basis of an 'Islamic Democracy'; the minorities and their rights; difficulties arising from division into two wings and the allocation of powers between the provinces and the Centre as also the lnaguage question.
The history of the various developments and the resolving of the may controversies and crises, which led eventually to the adoption of as Constitution for Pakistan, are examined and the Constitution analysed.
Dr. Choudhury's scholarship, backed by the ususual facilities which he has had for research, for access to original source material and for interview with the framers of the Constitution and their advisory bodies, has enabled him to produced a book which must be invaluable to students of Political Science in Pakistan and also to those inside Pakistan or abroad who are interested in obtaining an objective picture of the Pakistan political scene.
In this book we have the basic considerations for the formulation of the new Constitution which has been promised by President General Muhammad Ayub Khan.
Dr. Choudhury is Reader in Political Science in the University of Dacca, East Pakistan. He graduated in the B.A. Honours School of Calcutta University in 1944 and obtained the Master's degree in Political Science of that University in 1946.
In 1949 he joined Dacca University as a lecturer and subsequently went overseas for higher training. Joining Columbia University is a Ph. D. student in the Faculty of Political Science in 1954. Dr. Choudhury obtained the Doctorate (with distinction) in 1956.
His main interest has been in Comparative Government and a number of his articles on various aspects of government and politics in Pakistan have been published in leading academic journals in the U.K., the U.S.A. and Canada.
