Syed Abbas Ali Jaffery was born at Hyderabad Deccan on November 21, 1916 in a learned and respectable Syed family, whose ancestors migrated from Bukhara in Central Asia to Bhukkur and Multan in the Punjab and then to Shahjehanpur in the United Provinces before settling in Deccan in the 29th Century.
Mr. Jaffery graduated from Madras University in 1939, securing first class and first position in Persian (second language). He studied journalism in Lahore in 1942-43 and passed the Diploma in Journalism Examination of Punjab University in first division.
He was awarded a Gold Medal by Nawab Bahadur Yar Jung for the best speech in an Inter-College Urdu Elocution Competition held in Hyderabad Deccan in 1938.
Mr. Jaffery translated into English Allama Iqbal's Urdu Preface to 'Payam-i-Mashriq' while he was a college student. The translation was first published in the Nizam College magazine. "The Collegian", in 1938 and later in the "Pakistan Quarterly" in 1978.
Also during his college days he read a paper in Urdu in "Iqbal's Contribution to Urdu Poetry" at an Iqbal Day function held in Hyderbad Deccan in 1938 urder the chairmanship of 'Baba-e-Urdu, Moulvi Abdul Haq.
He was elected President of the Nizam College Urdu Union for the year 1938-39.
Mr. Jaffery has to his credit 35 years of experience in radio journalism.
He entered service in Decca Radio, Hyderabad, as a Sub-editor in 1941 and retired in 1975 as administrative and professional head of three Karachi-based offices of Radio Pakistan, namely, the Monitoring Department, the External News Desk and the Regional News Organization.
He was elected President of the Radio Editors Association for five successive years from 1960 to 1964.
After retirement, Mr. Jaffery contributed a number of articles to some national English dailies on topics of national importance including a treatise on the "Cultural Unity of Pakistan" (published in DAWN in three installments in October 1978) and an article on "The Ideological Basis of Pakistan" (Published in two installments in DAWN, June 4 & 6, 1976). He also wrote two articles on Allama Iqbal "Iqbal's Concept of the perfect Man" (Published in the DAWN, April 21,1976) and "Iqbal's Role in the Pakistan's Movement (DAWN, August 14, 1976).
In Addition to the translation of poems from Allama Iqbal's 'Payam-i-Mashriq' into English verse (Published in this volume), Mr. Jaffery has also translated two novels from English into Urdu. The translation of one of the novels "Vendetta" is now under print in Karachi.
