This book in a sense is a supplement to the author's earlier publication, Govemment and Politics in Pakistan which has gone through two editions and several reprlnts. The subject-matter of the study are the events of the first eight years of General Zia-ul-Haq's Martial Law Regime. Each new government that has come into power has held its predecessor responsible for the ills of the country and offered its own panacea. Zia's approach was different from the rest. Professed to be religious and in conformity with the ideology of Pakistan, its claim to the reformation of society in all its manifestations have been examined with detachment and objectivity. All the measures for economic reconstruction and reform have been thoroughly analysed. This volume is a revised edition of the book first published in 1985. It contains a wealth of material on every facet of our national life, based on extensive investigation and research by a highly qualified political scientist with nearly forty years of experience of analytical writings in a specialised field. It offers useful guidelines to our leqlslators, politicians and administrators and is a must for post-graduate students of the discipline. It is a thought-provoking discourse of the developments of the Zia period in the overall context of developments in Pakistan since its inception.
