Perspective and Problems
Dr. Mohammad Uzair was born in Barabanki near Lucknow. He grew up in Allahabad where he had his formal education from class three to Masters degree. He did his MA (Economics) from Allahabad University, in 1951. In the same year he migrated to Dacca (Dhaka), then the East Pakistan. He joined the University of Dacca (Dhaka) as a lecturer in Economics in August 1951. He moved to Karachi University in December 1955, and was associated with Institute of Business Administrations. He did his MBA and Ph.D. from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (USA). He left teaching in 1968, after being Director of IBA for some time. He worked in various government and semi government agencies. He was Member of Monopoly Control Authority, Government of Pakistan, in Islamabad, for over four years. He came back to Karachi, and held senior positions in three different financial institutions. He retired in 1992.
After retirement, he re-entered the academic world and was Dean in a private sector educational institution in the field of Business Administration. A former Vice Chancellor of Karachi University (Late Dr. Zafar H. Zaidi) wanted to establish a Department of Business Administration within the University, as IBA had become an autonomous degree awarding institution. He chose Dr. Uzair as the Project Director to set up the new Department, as he possesses administrative ability besides academic excellence. He successfully completed the assignment. He left Karachi University in middle of 2001. Since then he has been associated with another private sector institute as Dean and later as Rector.
Dr. Uzair has written several books including a book on Interest-free Banking. A collection of his earlier articles "Some Thoughts on Economy, Finance and Management" was published in 1974. He has been writing articles on economic topics. He is known for being analytical and candid in his criticism. Dr. Uzair is a life member of Pakistan Institute of International Affairs.
