The book "STRAY THOUGHTS - Some Socio-Economic Issues" is a collection of Essays on some important problems faced by Pakistan i.e. (a) low yield of agriculture and how to improve it (b) improper use of brushwood
(c) unhapphy state of education and how to overcome it (d) lack of inland water transport, cheapest means of transport in the country and how to develop it (e) inadequacy of taxation system in the mobilisation of resources for the country and some suggestions to restructure it (f) failure of Zakat system introduced in the country over fifteen years back and way it should be remodelled and (g) menance of unemployment and some tips for self employment.
Born on 19th September 1925, the author of this book, Abdul Jabbar Khan, has done his B.Com. in 1947 from Hailey College of Commerce, Lahore of the Punjab University.
He joined the National Bank of Pakistan in 1949 as an officer and held various important assignments. He was seconded to Industrial Development Bank of Pakistan in February, 1963 and remained there till February, 1973. His last position at the Industrial Development Bank of Pakistan was that of a Deputy Managing Director. He was appointed a Member of the Pakistan Banking Council, from January, 1977 to March, 1978. He served the Board of Industrial Management as Member Finance, from March, 1978 to November, 1978 He was President of Habib Bank Limited from November, 1978 to November, 1984 and thereafter he remained President of the National Bank of Pakistan till May, 1988. When the Pakistan Banking & Finance Services Commission was created in May, 1988, he was appointed its Member. From there he retired in May, 1989. Abdul Jabbar Khan is Fellow of the Institute of Bankers in Pakistan.
Throughout his career, he has sought to acquire first hand knowledge through extensive travelling, both within and outside the country, not only about banking but also other segments of economy, by meeting various trade bodies and interest groups. Blended with a rich and varied experience, the author is easily qualified to write on the subject of this monograph.
He has authored two books, one on the Non-Interest Banking in Pakistan and the other about development of banking in Pakistan during four decades since August, 1947. The latter book is being updated to cover the period of five decades.
