The book offers information on the various meteorological elements, their distribution and seasonal variation which constitute the weather and climate of Pakistan.
In the first four chapters it describes the general circulation in tropics, the monsoons of Indo-Pakistan subcontinent, and methods used for analysis of weather systems, surface and upper air conditions prevailing over Pakistan area.
In chapter V, it describes the controlling factors of weather in Pakistan, including tropical disturbances, western disturbances, monsoon trough, monsoon convergence zone, jet stream etc.
Chpaters VI & VII present a discussion of regional weather of the country and summaries of weather at principal stations of Pakistan.
Chapter VIII has been devoted to the Climates of Pakistan and climatic zones of Pakistan.
The last chapter of the book presents short notes of the author on various topics of meteorology, some of them are related to the applications of meteorology of interest to a common man.
Dr. K.M. Shamshad, T.I., a national of Pakistan, was born on 5th October 1923 at Morababad, India. He received B.Sc. degree from the University of Delhi, 1943, and M.S. degree in meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University, U.S.A., 1956, and was awarded a degree of Doctor of Science in meteorology from the Sussex College of Technology, England, 1983. He undertook advanced studies in meteorology in USA, U.K. and F.R. of Germany.
He served India Meteorologica Department during 1944-47, Pakistan Meteorological Department 1947-1976 and retired as a Senior Meteorologist from Government of Pakistan service in 1976. Dr. Shamshad also served at the Meteorology and Enviormental Protection Administration, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 1977-85. He has about forty years of experience of teaching, forecasting and research in the field of meteorology.
Dr. Shamshad was a member of WMO Commission of Aeronautical Meteorology, 1971. He is a co-author of a book entitled "The Climate of Karachi and How to Live in it" published in 1953. He also published several papers in USA, Pakistan and India. He was decorated with the National award of T.I. (Tamghai Imtiaz) by the President of Pakistan in 1969 in recognition of his service to the country. Earlier he was elected as an Assoicated Member of the Society of Sigma Vi (an honour society of USA) in 1956 in recognition of his achievements as an original investigator in the field of science. He was elected a Fellow of Royal Meteorological Society, London, 1954 and a Professional Member of the American Meteorological Society 1963.
