This is a collection of critical essays on English language and literature, published in the national and international jounals from 1960 to 1990. The literary articles were published in the Statesman, a weekly of Karachi. the articles on language were published in Forum, a quarterly from Washington, D.C. The Journal of English Language Teaching, a biannual journal from Madras, Indian, Higher Education Review, a journal of National Academy for Education, University Grants Commission, Islamabad.
In these articles, specially those on literature, the author has viewed the issues involved in terms of personal response. For the study of literature is, after all, a matter of personal response.
Syed Mohammad Abdur Rauf did his Master in English Literature from the University of Rajshahi, former East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. In 1982 he was nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to attend a six-week summer course on TESOL, at Notherwestern University, Evanston, Chicago, U.S.A. Besides he attended a number of international conferences on English language organized by the UGC and presented papers which were subsequently published in the English Teaching Forum, published from Washington D.C.
He began his teaching career in the early 60s as a lecturer at a postgraduate college under East Pakistan Education Service. After a few years he was elevated to the cadre of Assistant Professor. After the secession of East Pakistan in 1971, he migrated to what is now Pakistan. It 1973 he joined the University of Balochistan in the Department of English where he served until February 1987. In March 1987 he joined international Islamic University, Islamabad, as Assoicate Professor and Head, Department of English. In 1996 when the University decided to upgrade the department of English, which until then engaged in teaching English as a foreign language, to a postgraduate department, he was entrusted with the responsibility of drawing its scheme including the curriculum. At present he is heading the Department of English Literature.
Besides teaching, he also edited an English weekly for some time, gave radio talks in the world service of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation on religious themes for a number of years.
