A seasoned journalist, Shamim Akhtar is currently writing as a freelance on art and politico-social subjects for leading newspapers including Dawn, The Nation, Weekly Mag and Daily News. She also writes for jounals abroad including UK and The United States. She contributed articles on Pakistani art scene for Zameen (UK) and Pakistan Link (LA, USA). Her name is synonymous with Akhbar-e-Khawteen, the first woman's weekly in the country, where she worked for 29 years including 22 years in the capacity of the editor of the weekly. Through this organ, she enlightened and educated women of Pakistan concerning their social rights given to them in Islam and legislation of Pakistan. She is also the Founding Editor of Family Magazine, another weekly jounal of repute published by Nawa-e-Waqt Group of Papers.
Throughout a first division and position holder, after obtaining her masters in Philosophy in first class from Karachi University, Peshawar born Shamim Akhter joined the profession. While still in service, she completed a crash course in jounalism from Thomson Foundation, UK and a Special Course on Editing Books for Children organized by National Book Council of Pakistan in colloboration with UNICEF.
