The developing countries suffer from many common ailments on account of poverty and illiteracy. Deafness is a preventable disability which is presently adding to the burden of disease in our nations.
Pakistan stands at the cross roads of the near the middle and the far east. It has close links with India, China, Afghanistan, Iran and the Arab countries. It also has much in common with Africa and Latin America.
This book looks at the epideniology of deafness, the salient causes, current preveative, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative measures in Pakistan, and other developing countries.
It is earnestly hoped that the world will soon get rid of the menace of deafness.
Dr. Syed Shabih Haide Zaidi graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi, in 1966. He acquired his diploma in Otolaryngology from University of London and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Edinburgh in 1971. Since then he has been awarded the fellowship of American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons and Pakistan College of Physician & Surgeons.
He joined the Dow Medical College, Karachi, his alma mater in 1972, as an Assistant Professor in the department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery. In 1977, be became as Assoicate Professor, and in 1983, Professor and Chairman.
In 1985, he became the Principal and Chairman Academic Council. Sindh Medical College, Karachi in 1988 he joined the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolargagology and Head and Neck Surgery.
He is a keen writer, having contributed more than two hundred articles and papers to the scientific Journals. He has also contributed chaptes in undergraduate and postgraduate books. He has also been listed in the world Alamanc 'WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD. He is also the Co-editor of a book on 'MEDICAL ETHICS in the Contemporary Era & Authro of a book, a clinical monograph on oral cancer. It was duly awarded the National Book Foundation Award for the best published book in 1995.
Dr. Zaidi is the founder member of Pakistan Society of Otolaryngology. Since its inception in 1979, he has held the position of joint Secretary. General Secretary and President of the Society. He was the Secretary General of the 8th Asia Occania Congress. Recently he elected as the president of ORL society. Pakistan for the second time.
Dr. Zaidi was the first editor of the Journal of Pakistan College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is currently the Editor of Pakistan Journal of Otolaryagology and Head and Neck Surgery.
Since 1995, he has taken up the challenge of combating the menace of deafness and hearings impairment in the developing world. As a WHO consultant on community noise, his contribution has been duly acknowledged in the archives of world health organisation.
Presently he is the chairman of the department of Medical Education at Dow Medical College. As a WHO task group member, his contribution in this field is valued by many educationist inerested in the development of community oriented medical education in Pakistan.
