Having risen through the ranks of the Communist Party of Pakistan right up to its top-tier decision-making apparatus. Syed Jamaluddin Naqvi was the reddest of the Red for almost his entire political life spanning four decades. In keeping with the trends of the time, he faced hardships and was even arrested thrice - 1954, 1972 and 1980 - and made to spend almost eight years behind the bars - one year in solitary confinement - for being a 'threat to Pakistan'. All cases came to nothing and were subsequently quashed in 1977 and 1988.
While the hardships could never break his soul or cause even a minor tremble in his political commitment, things inside the CPP and happenings behind the Iron Curtain gave him a real jolt. It was the Left itself that left him a man disillusioned. In the real spirit of Socialist thought, he decided to be progressive in approach while the Left wanted him to be progressive in approach while the Left wanted him to be Progressive in nomenclature, calling him a renegade. Having left the Left behind in 1990, he puts everthing into context in these memoirs. In a way, it puts the entire Pakistani Left into perspective.
Born in the Indian city of Allahabad in 1933, Jamaluddin Naqvi did his Masters in English Literature in 1954 from the University of Karachi and was heading at the time of his retirement the English Department at what now has become the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology. His political and academic lives ran parallel for more than three decades.
Apart from political pamphlets for the Communist Party of Pakistan, newspaper articles and several booklets, he wrote 'The Mass Uprising' which was published by the World Marxist Review in 1970. His first book, 'Inside Pakistan', was published by Patriot Publishers, New Delhi, in 1986, while 'Partition and Convergence: South Asia In The 12st Century' was published by Fiction House, Lahore, in 2006. And finally came 'The Third World In A Changing World' a few year later.
In 1999, he founded a Pakistan think-tank, Forum For Democracy, that has remained dormant for last few years, giving him time to pen his memoirs.
